When this came out at Sephora, I just felt the urge to buy it. I mean, matte lipsticks AND a gold makeup bag? It was calling my name in a smooth smoooooth voice and I couldn’t resist. I have no regrets so far!!
Nars always nails it when it comes to simplicity and chic. The black and white packaging with the gold highlights is absolutely beautiful. It makes me think of the 1920’s-1940’s and how elegant and badass women were in the movies back then.
The gold bag with the 3D lips is simply stunning! It is highly reflective and so elegant. I probably will use it as a purse during fancy events 🙂
The zipper is sturdy and the brand’s name is engraved on it. How elegant!
Wild Ways: an orangey copper with shimmer. I wasn’t sure about the colour at first, but it looks good. Probably will pair it with a warm-toned eye makeup.
Spellbound: a light pink with silver shimmer. I thought I would love this colour, but now I am not sure if I can ever wear it… It looks pale and the silver hue is not very flattering on me. I might have to wear it as a topper.
Toundra: a copper brown with shimmer. This is my 2nd favourite shade: the shimmers give a metallic effect to the lipstick and it looks very flattering. Slightly unconventional for me, but I love it.
Endangered Red: a matte Bordeaux red. This shade is by far my favourite: it is very pigmented and not drying and gives me a vampy look. It makes me feel like a 1920s femme fatale.
The lip pencils are full sized (2.4 g each) and usually sell for 33CAN$ each, while the kit sells for 62CAN$. At this price, it is a bargain and the bag is a nice bonus! Toundra and Endangered Red have a matte finish, while Wild Ways and Spellbound have a sheer finish. Also, Wild Ways and Spellbound are limited-edition!
I am already familiar with Nars’ velvet matte lip pencils, in fact, I LOVE Cruella: it is the perfect red for any occasion and looks so classy. Despite having previous experience with the product, I tried to look at the lip pencils with a new eye.
I’ve read comments from people criticizing the pigmentation of the lip pencils in the kit, and here’s what I think: bear in mind that 2 lip pencils have a sheer finish, so no, they are not going to be fully pigmented. I personally like it better that way because the lipsticks are more versatile: wear them alone for a more subtle look, and on top of a lip liner for a more pigmented lip.
Swatches from left to right: Wild Ways, Spellbound, Toundra, Endangered Red. Shot in natural daylight, no flash.
Overall, I think this kit is worth it. I am disappointed with 1 shade out of 4, which is not bad. You might wanna consider sharing the lipsticks if you don’t like all the shades, but keep the bag for yourself!!
