How to slay the holidays and have a blast | tips to stay mentally healthy and stress-free

On both ends of the Christmas spirit spectrum, there are those who are crazy about Christmas and start getting ready in October, and those who dread the end of the year celebrations and avoid it like the plague. The holidays are a lovely time of year to take a break and celebrate, but it can easily become a very stressful period for a ton of reasons.

Last year, my head was in an awful mood so Christmas felt very weird and foreign to me, but I still managed to enjoy myself – this was my own little miracle. Since then, I’ve learned a few tips that I would like to share with you so you can enjoy the holidays and still feel mentally healthy after the celebrations are over.

Write everything down

Make a to-do list and a gift list, in order to make sure that you don’t forget anyone or anything! Write all upcoming activities, suppers, parties or trips in a calendar. This really helps me to visualize when I will be able to recharge and when I need to be in party mode.

Don’t forget self-care and me time

Speaking of recharging, make time for yourself. If you are a bit more of an introvert or an ambivert like me, you know you need some quality β€œme time” in order to avoid exhaustion. Read a book by the Christmas tree, go for a walk, take a bath, etc. My personal favourite: adult colouring books!!! These are sure to help you relax and clear your mind.Β

Planning is key

If you can, plan ahead. Book your festivities early to avoid stress or anxiety, and get your gifts early in the month (if not before that). If you can’t, avoid last-minute crises and have some extra fun gifts such as bath products, chocolates, notebooks, etc. to offer to last minute guests!

It’s probably not as bad as you think

Not looking forward to the festivities whatsoever? Find the one thing that will make it less unpleasant. Maybe it’s wearing a new outfit or a fabulous pair of shoes, maybe it’s trying out some new makeup, or maybe it’s chatting with that person you haven’t seen in a while.

Treat yourself

I have to admit that it has become a habit over the years to get a little gift for… myself! I may or may not place it under the tree, but it’s always fun to open on Christmas day. However, treating yourself doesn’t have to cost you anything! Watch your favourite holiday film, make your best cookie recipe, etc. You deserve this!!

Overall, try to embrace the moment and fill your mind with positive memories: it only lasts a little while and it is gone before you know it!
