Back in November, I treated myself during the Sephora sale and bought quite a few makeup items that I wanted to try. One of them was Huda Beauty’s Contour & Strobe Lip Set. This also happens to be my very first makeup item from the well-known brand! I also bought an Obsessions Eyeshadow Palette from Huda Beauty, but I have yet to try and review it. But let’s talk about the lip set!

I have to admit, I fell in love with the packaging and simply couldn’t resist! That lip-shaped metallic tin is SO cute and unique! I almost want to collect them in all different colours. I love that the foam inside is removable so I can reuse the tin to keep, well, makeup – what else?!

The kit retails for C$33 and includes a lip liner, a mini liquid lipstick, and a mini lip strobe. The lip liner is full sized, the liquid lip is 1,9 mL (while a full size is 5 mL), and the lip strobe is 2 mL. Perfect travel sizes!

I wasn’t sure which set pick and went for the pink one because well, who doesn’t like a pink lip? Also, I had heard great things about the lipstick shade “Trophy Wife” and wanted to try it for myself. If you like pink makeup, you might also like Physician’s Formula Rose All Day collection!

Huda Beauty Contour & Strobe Lip set Review

This kit contains a liner in “Trophy Wife“, a liquid lipstick in “Trophy Wife“, and a lip strobe in “Shameless“.

The lip contour

The lip liner is very pigmented and long wear. This compares to MAC’s pro longwear lip liners, in my opinion, it’s maybe even a little bit better.

The liquid lipstick

The liquid lipstick feels quite liquidy on the lips, but I think this is due to the applicator that picks up more product than a Kat von D liquid lipstick, for example. This is maybe weird, but I really like the smell of this product: it reminds me of chocolate pudding! The liquid lipstick is very comfortable on the lips and it feels lightweight.

However, it remains a little tacky on the lips, which I do not like with a liquid lipstick. It is also not entirely transfer-proof, as my lips left marks on my glass when I drank. Also, the shade is darker than I thought, and it’s a little bit hard to guess how the shade will look in real life because the container is matte, so not entirely see-through. But it’s no big deal, really.

The lip strobe

The lip strobe is gorgeous on its own, and I think that’s how I’ll wear it in the future. When worn on top of the liquid lipstick, I find I only see the glossy effect and not really the shimmer. Also, the lip strobe somehow removes the liquid lipstick and the combo just doesn’t stay on the lips like a liquid lipstick normally would.

How to achieve the perfect Trophy Wife + Shameless look

Here’s a useful tip: let the liquid lipstick dry COMPLETELY before applying the lip strobe and don’t go too heavy on the gloss. The first time I tried the lip set, I applied the strobe almost right after the lipstick and a few hours and a snack later, everything on my lips was gone except the lip liner! Very 90s, but not the look I was going for… 🙁 However, this proves just how longwear the lip liner is!

I also did a wear test where I swatched Huda’s liquid lipstick next to Kat von D’s liquid lipstick and rubbed it under water. The Kat von D lipstick stayed longer on my skin! Below are swatches of the lip liner, the liquid lipstick and the lip strobe (from left to right).

And here are the same swatches with, in the middle, the lip strobe applied on top of the liquid lipstick.

Overall, this is a great kit by Huda Beauty, but considering I am not a fan of the lip strobe and won’t be using the lip liner so much, I would rather have bought the full-sized liquid lipstick.

I recommend Huda Beauty’s liquid lipsticks but I find that Kat von D’s last longer on the lips without budging.
