Battle of the Smashbox Palettes: Hot and Cold Challenge| Part 1 – Warm Makeup Look

Gosh has it been a while since I posted a makeup-related post! :O Please excuse the delay, I was on vacation earlier this month, and then I was very sick when I came back. It seems I always catch a virus on the plane… For this post, I wanted to do something fun and different, so I came up with a makeup BATTLE!!! The concept is very simple: I picked a warm-toned and a cool-toned Smashbox Cover Shot palette and created 2 very different looks. Let me know which look is your favourite!

Oh and did you catch that Katy Perry reference in the title? Yeah, I’ve been wanted to do that forever 😉

Smashbox Cover Shot palette: mini review

This post is not meant to be a full review of the products, but let me says a few things:

  • the price for these palettes is excellent ($CAN35) for the variety of shades you get!
  • the shadows are pigmented and blend well, even though there is a little bit of fallout
  • my only negative comment is that once applied, the shadows seem to fade a little over time and oxidize, so after a couple of hours, your eye makeup looks different. It’s a little disappointing.

Here are the palettes battling in this week’s challenge:

I got these 2 palettes as part of a kit over the holidays which included both palettes and a highlighter palette.

And now for the first makeup look of this battle, I created a warm-toned eye makeup with the Ablaze palette. I went for a halo eye, using mostly the shades “Nirvana” and “Throwback” for the halo, and “Torch” in the center of the lid. I mixed “Throwback” and “Dark Horse” in the crease and completed the look with a brown pencil and mascara. To see amazing swatches, click here.

Please don’t mind my facial expressions too much, I was extremely tired when I shot this 😉

Believe it or not, I almost never wear warm tones on my eyes. My complexion has cool undertones so I tend to keep my makeup on the cool side as well. At first, I wasn’t even sure if I liked the shades because this is so different from my go-to looks! But it slowly grew on me 😉

This look is perfect for fall: it reminds me of the colours of leaves in September and October, here in Montreal. I will also try to recreate this look late in the summer because the orangey tones will look gorgeous with a tan. I always find that warm tones look nicer on medium and dark skin, or simply on anyone with a warmer complexion than me.

Voilà, that was part 1 of the Smashbox palettes battle! Next post will be the second part of the challenge, featuring my cool-toned makeup look.

I look forward to reading what you think of both looks and I am dying to know which one is your favourite!
