Last week was my 6th month anniversary of cohabiting with my cat! I know, a “normal” person wouldn’t say that but if you read the full story here, you will understand why adopting my furry pal was a big deal. đ Since adoption is a pretty big event in one’s life, I decided to list for you 10 things I wish I knew before adopting my cat. Enjoy, and let me know if any of this resonates with you!
10 things I wish I knew before adopting a cat
- Your home will no longer be yours, it will be your catâs. You are only a guest, maybe a slave too. And you’ll be fine with it.
- Speaking of your home, say goodbye to a super clean and tidy place. There will be cat hair EVERYWHERE. Mostly on your socks and in your food.
- Adopting a furry friend will require some time to adapt, both for them and for you. You
maywill encountersomemany sleepless nights. - Say goodbye to sleeping in on weekends. Cats need to be fed on a regular schedule and they will make sure you know when itâs time to fill their bowl.
- You will need to set some time to play with your cat. Cats bond with you while playing and they need attention more than you think. Otherwise, your furniture will suffer. Trust me on that one…
- Your cat will become the center of attention every time you have guests over. And when you’re chilling on your own too.Â
- You will share your intimacy with the cat, all the time. No more privacy, no more alone time. My cat runs to the shower before I can even get in…Â
- Your motherly instincts will be strong and you will worry and check on your baby A LOT. Time spent away from your cat will hurt.Â
- No more spontaneous vacations or weekend getaways: you are responsible for a furry baby now. Make sure you have 1 or 2 reliable catsitters and treat them well.Â
- Your cat will make your heart melt, all the time, and adopting him/her will be the best decision you ever made.
Do you have any pets? I’d love to hear your adoption story!

I totally relate about never sleeping in, My cats get fed at 6am because that was my husband’s wake up schedule when we first got them. Now he doesn’t need to get up at 6am for work… but the cats want food as early as 5 still xD Daylight savings time is the absolute worst trying to adjust them back to a regular schedule.
Ohhh yes that’s the worst đ Do you feed them as soon as you wake up? I read that if you don’t feed them right away, they won’t wake you up too early. Maybe you can try that? :/
Well we try to ignore them as long as we can but then they start pushing things off our shelves and scratching up baseboards to wake us up đ They’re so bratty!đš
Ugh, cats… But we still love them no matter what! <3
Iâve had 3 cats and wouldnât trade them for anything. Theyâre little 4 legged, furry weirdos. I love my fur kids.
Haha I love how you said that, it’s so true!! My cat makes me laugh so much, every day, just by being himself and doing weird stuff. Couldn’t imagine living without him! -xox-
